This is a circuitous tale of a penguin desperately trying to rid himself of hiccups he got from eating spicy foods. Terribly bothered by them, he enlists his friends to help. He doesn’t have success until his friend the whale plays a trick on him that thwarts his hiccups for good; or at least until he celebrates with more spicy foods.
I honestly don’t know if there’s ever been a book that has tried to explain hiccups to children. Little Penguin Gets The Hiccups written and illustrated by Tadgh Bentley is such a book. While this story is certainly not addressing the science behind hiccups, it does take on the fear of this strange occurrence. I foresee children enjoying and relating to little penguin’s journey and at the same time lessoning their discomfort in experiencing hiccups and finding a fun way to put them at bay.
